McDoodles of Texas
Buffy Mcdonald
Buffy and her family have a great story for who they are and why they breed. Please read it below:
We have been asked "Why do you do this? Why do you breed?" Sounds like a simple question right? My first thought is because we love sharing well socialized, healthy dogs with other families. We love the joy a puppy can bring and the healing it can do. But, it is more than that. So much more.
My whole life I have loved animals. I was always bringing strays home with me as a kid. When my husband and I moved into our first house we started fostering rescues. It was an emotional experience saying goodbye to our fosters at adoption events each week and coming home with a new crew. We were the poster child for foster fails keeping several, struggling to say goodbye to others.
We raised our kids around dogs and animals. My oldest daughter takes after me and loves animals big and small. When she was diagnosed with a serious health condition that would be aided by the assistance of a service dog, we started the arduous task of looking for one. Let's just say finding an organization or a dog that can support "invisible disabilities" is not an easy task. The application process can be lengthy, the wait can be years, and the cost can be exorbitant. It became pretty clear after months of research and applying for help, we would have to look at some other options.
We started the hunt for a breed well suited to be a working Service Dog. That in itself was not easy. There is so much more that goes into a Service Dog than just training. We purchased two mini Australian Shepherds from a friend in the hopes that one would work out. We were blessed to find Rebecca Clayton of Kindred Spirit Ranch LLC who helped us navigate the training. It was clear that one of them was great at home, but not cut out for public access. With Rebecca's help and support, Nugget completed her training just in time to walk high school graduation with Chloe.
Nugget provided the support Chloe needed to move hours away from home successfully while navigating her illness. To Chloe, Nugget is more than just a Service Dog, Nugget is a companion bringing her joy, filling parts of her heart and soul that she didn't even realize needed to be filled.
When we started this journey into breeding under the guidance of a mentor and friend, we wanted to provide something we found hard to find, a well-adjusted, well-socialized companion for families who wanted more out of their relationship with their new addition. We raise puppies with a voice in their placement, helping families match their needs with the needs of the puppy. We encourage our puppies to be brave and problem solve through age appropriate activities to prepare them for their forever homes.
With each litter we try to identify puppies that would be a good fit as a Service Dog or ESA and give back to the community and to those that struggle to find the canine companion that will aid them in living their best life. In this effort, we have partnered with Rebecca and the non-profit she started, Liberty for All, Service Dogs. We have donated several dogs who have successfully transitioned to their new jobs as Service Dogs, and will continue to identify and donate good candidates in future litters.
